TheDiskioff team has not only been busy organising various friendly games forsocial engagement and to keep fit but has also been reviving partnerships withour old friends Scrutinize while also making new friends with adidas.

Ournew friends at adidas has provided us with the spanking new 3-stripe kit forthe upcoming soccer tournament (2012 Century City Corporate Cup - Sun, 4thMarch) and we are certainly looking forward to seeing you come through onSunday to see a new look Diskioff on the field.

adidas,which is a well known German sports brand with big affiliations in SouthAfrica, has been around for a number of years. The brand is looking to broadenits horizons into the youth sports market and thus has agreed to team up withDiskioff in providing us with kit for our players and for many more sportingrelations in the future.

Webelieve that our new partnership will help Diskioff grow from strength tostrength while looking good in 3-stripes along the way. We are excited to workwith adidas and can’t wait to see our Diskioff team in their new kit.

They say you won't go far in a tournament without a good goalkeeper. Thando “Taylor” Peterson of DISKIOFF conceded just seven goals in seven matches in the 2011 CAMAF Corporate Cup.

One of the most important positions in a soccer team, as with many team sports, is that of the goalkeeper. The primary role of the goalkeeper is to prevent the opposition team from scoring any goals.

As the only player to be allowed to use their hands, the goalkeeper is also responsible for organising the defence and often beginning team attacks.

Great goalkeepers are often the difference between a good team and a championship-winning team.

Following DISKIOFF's second place finish in the CAMAF Corporate Cup, Taylor was awarded with a watch for his great performance as best goalkeeper.

CAMAF Corporate Cup - 2011

DISKIOFF were beaten on penalties in their final game of the 2011 CAMAF Corporate Cup, losing 3-2 after a 1-1 draw with Logday Property Trust on Sunday.

In this tournament, Diskioff appeared dominant and looked comfortable playing their game as usual. Diskioff beat the likes of Ian Dickie, Magpies, The Citizen and The Catalans to top their group.

Statistics show that Diskioff really dominated the first round and it wasn’t a surprise when they won the quarterfinals 9-2 against GVJ.

The semis were tricky as Investec scored the first goal and tried to defend their goal using the “Zone Defense”.

“Zone defense is a type of defense which is the alternative to man-to-man defense; instead of each player guarding a corresponding player on the other team, each defensive player is given an area known as a "zone" to cover.”

However, Investec didn’t know that “zone” tend to be weak on the perimeter, so they are not very effective against teams with good outside shooters. Mouse was the goal scoring hero with two superb late goals… and eventually Diskioff won the game 4-1.

Diskioff vs. Logday Property Trust:

Trust enjoyed the better of the first minutes, in which they scored their goal, but Diskioff then had the better opportunities. Mouse, who was everyone’s favourite player in the tournament, brought back Diskioff into the game with another superb goal - and without any breaks later the game ended 1-1. The game had to be decided by a penalty shoot-out, and Diskioff lost 3-2.

Fewrequirements for the teams: at least 4 members in your squad must be beer drinkers(tasting will be done before kick off). No professional players. No greatplayers.

Allteams must have at least 1 lady as a member. (Please note) every 15 minutesthere will be a beer break. Rules: Behave yourselves or you get kicked out!

Theoverall rule of the tournament is to have fun and everyone is a winner. Thetournament is open to none professional teams and players.

Welcome to Phuza Thursday Soccer

Phuza Thursday Soccer is a 5-a-side friendly that was started three months ago by a few guys from Kick Off. Today the 5-a-side has grown and more people are joining… it has really kept everyone in shape since Day One. Players have praised the idea as brilliant, a getaway from their girlfriends and wives for 60 minutes.

Every week players are selected from well-known magazines (Kick Off, Sports Illustrated and Men’s Health) to showcase their talent on the field.

“I’m not sure how the original game came about, but after the first two times everyone was raving about it and loving how it was bringing different brands together. So I approached Basil Fortuin and he spoke to the people at the Gianluca Vialli Soccer Centre to offer them a trade exchange whereby we give them advertising space on KickOff.com and they let us play there for free four times a month,” says one of the organisers, Ryan Cooper of Kick Off.

In the twelfth week of Phuza Thursday Soccer, Team Kick Off defeated Dangerous Darkies 11-9 in a very high tempo game. Team Kick Off controlled the game in the first 15 minutes with some superb displays on the field that saw them lead 5-1. However, the midfield maestro Neil Greig came to the rescue for Darkies with a brilliant hat-trick in less than 5 minutes to bring back the game to 5-4.

Gareth Rosslee was the saviour for Team Kick Off at the back and wasteful chances from Darkies didn’t help. The second half was like a rugby match as 16 more goals were scored… making it an entertaining game that was hard to stop even when the 60 minutes of play were over.

“I’m loving the 5-a-side games. It’s a great way to spend time with my colleagues – and with other guys in the company – and it’s really helping my fitness levels too. It’s a great cardio workout, with the added benefit of having a fun time as well. The games started out pretty tame, but over the past couple of weeks we’ve all really picked up the pace, and the games have been pretty intense,” says Mark Van Dijk of Men’s Health.

The next time Ajax Cape Town, Santos or Vasco Da Gama coaches decide to scout for talent they mustn’t go further than the Sea Point grounds. There is talent there and with Bafana Bafana struggling upfront with strikers, guys like Neil Greig and Brendan Cooper (who both netted hat-tricks) should be the answer ahead of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, while they are still in shape and hungry to wear the gold and green jersey.

Keverne Morland from Kick Off adds, “The 5-a-side games every Thursday have really helped me with my fitness. When I first started I could barely make it to half-time without being subbed at least twice, now I’m playing full games. Every week I look forward to playing not just for the fitness but the game is LOADS of fun. There is nothing like being part of a team again.”

After every game players do what is rightfully correct and chill with a cold beer and reflect on moments of the game. It’s a great way to spend a Thursday after four long days of work.
